Everyone loves a white, toothy smile. But, going to the dentist or the hygienist to whiten teeth can become pretty expensive. The good news is you can learn how to whiten teeth at home. If you know how to do it, then you can have that pretty smile anytime you want without spending a fortune.

Methods of whitening teeth

White teeth give the appearance of having healthy teeth and gums. There are some easy remedies and tips you can follow if you want to know how to whiten teeth at home. However, before you do, make sure to talk to your dentist or hygienist to ensure you are not going to damage your teeth when doing home remedies.

  • Practice excellent hygiene

This is really an easy step to follow, but not everyone brushes his/her teeth properly. But, when you do it right, you will eliminate build up of particles that accumulate on your teeth preventing its white colour from shining. Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes. If you have difficulties timing yourself, get an electric toothbrush with a timer to be sure your teeth get the attention they need on a daily basis. Floss regularly.

  • Use whitening strips

There are many whitening strips sold commercially at drugstores and even supermarkets. They are easy to use. Just make sure to read the labels properly and check there is no chlorine dioxide as a listed ingredient which can damage your teeth’s enamel.

  • Buy whitening toothpaste

Like strips, whitening gel is also readily available in supermarkets and drug stores. Use it in place of your regular toothpaste to see if it makes a difference.

Take note that teeth whitening in general does not last for a long time. Your teeth will stay white from 3 to 4 months. If you have it done professionally, it can last for up to 3 years.

Last but not the least

Another tip to whiten teeth at home is to bleach them. Bleaching the teeth is an approved practice by the American Dental Association. To do this, you have to buy hydrogen peroxide (3%) and follow the instructions carefully. Usually, the solution should be 50% of water and 50% of the hydrogen peroxide. It should be used like a mouthwash. You can also add baking soda on your toothpaste to whiten your teeth.
