Viagra could help in the fight against obesity and cancer

Sildenafil citrate or as it better known to millions of users around the world as Viagra, is a treatment to help solve erectile dysfunction or like in the case of the drug Revatio, that is contains the same chemical compound that treats pulmonary hypertension, but two different research groups may have found that the magic blue pill may also help in weight loss or in the treatment of cancer when combined with green tea.

Japanese scientists have long believed that green tea can battle carcinogenesis, however a human enzyme, denominated PDE5, blocks the tea’s effectiveness, but a recent study by professor Hirofumi Tachibana, at the Kyushu University and published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that adding erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra to green tea extracts can stop cancer growth and in certain cancers even eradicate the malignant cells.

The experiments were conducted on mice that were implanted with different types of cancer cells and the result was that the growth of the cancer cells completely stopped with the cocktail, while in a mouse with human breast cancer cells, the cells completely disappeared.

Due to the promising results, researchers in the United States have decided to start a clinical trial treatment on cancer patients later this year.

The second study was to find out why mice are less prone to obesity when fed Viagra and the research was conducted by Dr. Alexander Pfeifer, director of the university’s Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Bonn in Germany, who found that the mice converted the undesirable white fat cells to beige fat cells which are also human energy burners.

In both studies, the researchers have sent out a warning message: Don’t try this at home. Simply put, these are preliminary studies so don’t try to cook up your own dieting or cancer remedy, because it result in uknown side-effects.
