Yoga: which style suits you better?

There are as many types of yoga as reason why you should practise it, or try it at least. A lot of people who has never tried it thinks it is a more spiritual thing where you sit in uncomfortable positions and sing chants (and you can certainly do that). But Yoga has much more to offer, and you can choose from a restorative class, focused on stretching or get a high intensity class.

BIKRAM YOGA/ HOT YOGA

Bikram Choudhury, who was an Indian Olympic athlete in the 60’s, founded Bikram Yoga. In 90 minutes you perform a sequence of 26 postures, and it requires discipline, effort and concentration.

Hot Yoga doesn’t repeat the same sequence and classes are usually 60 minutes long.

Both styles require a heated environment, that helps with flexibility It also detoxifies the body as you sweat all the toxins away.

POWER YOGA

Widely extended, this style takes other yoga styles further, and combines yoga postures or asanas with intense aerobic workout. How? By creating a flow. There’s no stop between poses, and it is the style recommended for people looking for a more intense workout.

ASHTANGA

Physically complex, as it involves coordination between breathing and a serie of poses that make you sweat and improves circulation. This yoga style is not recommended for beginners.

Developed by Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, this style focuses on postures and body alignment. Each pose last a longer period of time and it uses objects like chairs, blocks, cushions or straps to help keeping the posture and perform a better pose. Iyengar is your style if you are looking for a better flexibility and endurance.

This style combines yoga and acrobatics. Definitely not for begginers. It is the only style where you need a partner. It requires a lot of concentration and coordination, it provides mental and physical health.
