Worst foods to eat when pregnant

One of the big no no's when it comes to selecting what you put in your pregnant body is fish that contains mercury. Alas, there are species that are more vulnerable than others. For example, swordfish tilefish, shark and even canned albacore tuna contain a lot of mercury and can accumulate in the human body. When this happens, it can also affect the brain, hearing and vision of the baby.

But, that does not mean that you can't eat fish all throughout your pregnancy. You can eat fish that are considered low in mercury such as cod, salmon, trout and tilapia. They are actually good for you and your unborn child because they contain omega-3 fatty acids, as well as DHA which is good for the baby's brain development. Make sure though that everything is cooked well to avoid problems.

Do you love sushi and sashimi? Unfortunately, you have to hold off on these types of foods for a while. It is not recommended to eat these as they are raw. Foods that are not cooked are great places for harbouring bacteria that can lead to food poisoning.

Deli meat is another type of food that expecting Mums should steer clear of. These include ham, bologna, hotdogs and the like. The reason? These foods can contain listeria, the only known bacterium that can survive refrigerator temperatures of 5°C. Listeria can get into the bloodstream and will also affect the health and development of the unborn child.

Avoid unpasteurized food as it can also carry listeria. Do not eat cheese such as feta, camembert or blue cheese unless it says on the label that they are pasteurized.

Eating raw bean sprouts is not also advised as they may contain bacteria such as salmonella, E.coli and listeria. Wash your salads well and eat pre-prepared ones within 2 days after the packet has been opened.

Caffeine is not also recommended and although 1 or 2 cups a day may be considered okay, but if you can skip your fave coffee for a while, do it. Caffeine is a stimulant and can increase blood pressure and levels of anxiety.

Steer clear of unknown herbal teas because there are no sufficient studies in existence that can prove their safety on pregnant women. But, you can still consume green teas, chamomille and mint.

Hence, the rule of thumb when it comes to selecting food that you can consume during your pregnancy may be simple. Ensure that all foods are cooked thoroughly, avoid raw/processed and unpasteurized foods. With proper vigilance and care, you can have a fuss-free pregnancy and a healthy baby.
