Sleep is vital for good health and to function well. The amount of sleep individuals need varies. There are some who feel rested with only 4 hours of sleep whilst others need as much as 10 hours.

One factor that affects sleep is the consumption of alcohol. A couple of glasses of wine can help you relax and fall asleep quicker. However, using alcohol or liquor to knock yourself out will not improve quality of sleep. Once the effects of alcohol wear out, then you are awake. You might even get a hangover.

Make your bedroom conducive to sleeping. Block out the noise and light (if you are sensitive to it). Use pillows to make yourself comfortable. Having the correct mattress that won't give you back aches also helps a lot in getting that elusive sleep.

Refrain from watching TV or looking at your electronic devices at least an hour to a few hours before bedtime. Studies show that blue lights of screens on your phones, computers or tablets can suppress melatonin which is a sleep inducing hormone.

Caffeine also keeps you awake so ditch the coffee several hours before bedtime. Do not drink other beverages that have caffeine in them such as cola or energy drinks. There are also other substances that can interfere with sleep such as tea, chocolate, diuretics and appetite suppressants.

Keep your linen fresh and clean. You can also use aroma therapy using incense and scented candles. Do not forget to snuff them out before nodding off to dreamland.
