New and Old Tips on How to Get Rid of a Cough
Whether it is cold and flu season or an unforseen cough, it is never fun when coughing spells occur, especially when you are out in public. Thankfully they can be easily manageable. Here are a few tips on how to get rid of a cough and get you back on your feet.
The Old Ways and the New Ways
Mom's tend to have cures on how to get rid of a cough that they may have used on you as a child. Here are some of the common home remedies.
Take 2 teaspoonfuls of honey every few hours and let it slide its way down your throat. This helps soothe it for awhile, but it may come back. Simply repeat when necessary.
Drink honey mixed in with tea or any warm and clear fluids. Even hot water, lemon and honey can be a effective and easy drink.
Keep drinking water and staying hydrated. This will help thin out the mucus if you have a wet cough or moisten the through for those with dry coughs. Either way it is important to stay hydrated.
Turn on the hot water and take a steamy shower. Breath in the steam and loosen up the mucus. If you don't want to stand in the shower, get a hot bowl, lean over it, put a towel over your head, and breath.
If the home remedies are not working, you can always try taking over the counter medicine. Menthol cough drops are common to use, but if they are not available, try hard candy. This still produces saliva and helps keep things moistened.
Chest rubs that have menthol or camphor are commonly used as well, especially at night. If the cough is keeping you up at night try night time cough suppressants. It will allow you to sleep at night but most are not recommended for children under 4 years old.
One of the causes for coughs could be dry air in the home. If this is the case, consider purchasing a humidifier but note that they need to be regularly cleaned. Also get rid of any irritants in the house such as perfumes, sprays, and smoke.
If these tips are still not working and the coughing persists, go to your nearest GP and have them take a look just in case it is something more serious.

Make sure though that in the meantime you don't want share the cough with anyone. Make sure you cough into the nook of your elbow rather than your hand where germs will be easily spread.
