What happens when you drink hot water every day?

Drinking your way to health is not a new thing. We've all read how much water we should consume in a day. We all know the benefits of drinking milk to help rehydration. You might have read that coconut water is better at hydrating you than plain old water. All of those things are true. It's also true that you should start your day with a cup of hot water. Swapping your cup of tea for a mug of hot water will have a lot of health benefits. It helps your digestion. It can aid weight loss. It's great for detoxification, and it improves circulation. It also lowers stress.

Stress

According to mentalhealth.org, 84 per cent of us have experienced stress at some point in our life. Work, relationships, money and health problems all cause stress. Learning to cope with stress and learning how to recognise it are things everyone has to tackle through adulthood. Taking the edge off stress with food or alcohol often leads to additional stress a little further down the line when you put on weight or develop an addiction. Interestingly, there's proof that drinking hot water can have an impact on your stress levels.

Hydration

We sometimes feel stressed because we're dehydrated. We can also develop headaches if we don't drink enough fluids. This can also lead to stress. According to Amanda Carlson, RD, director of performance nutrition at Athletes' Performance, "Cortisol is one of those stress hormones. Staying in a good hydrated status can keep your stress levels down." The difference that hot water has over cold fluids is that the heat helps the central nervous system, which helps calm down those anxious feelings that cause stress.

Weight loss

There's also a suggestion that drinking hot water can aid weight loss. Consuming hot water speeds up your metabolism. It also assists your digestive system by pushing waste out of your intestines. Water has no calories, so it's far better for weight loss than any other fluid. If consumed before meals, it will help suppress your appetite.

Teeth

There's another benefit that you won't have realised — hot water's less harsh on your teeth than cold water. Teeth absorb warm water more easily than cold water. Dental fillings can contract when you drink cold water. That doesn't happen when you drink warm water.

Toxins

Warm water can help you slow down the ageing process. That might sound grand, but it's true because hot water consumption rids the body of toxins. The warm water raises our body temperature and boosts our circulation. The sweat this creates carries away the toxins from our bodies.

How much water?

Water makes up 75 per cent of our body. Water helps us to digest food, and some chemical reactions within the body wouldn't be possible without water. You can live without food for a few weeks. If you go more than a few days without fluids, you'll die. You might have heard that you should drink eight glasses per day. That works out at two litres. You need to drink regularly. Taking two litres of water at one time of day won't have the desired effect. Our kidneys can only remove one litre per hour. If you drink more than that, you risk losing electrolytes.
