How to get rid of cellulite
Cellulite is that unsightly patch of crinkled, bumpy skin that looks awful. Apart from preventing you at times to don your favourite bikini on the beach, it is not really a medical condition. We get to know what cellulite is, the causes and how to get rid of cellulite or diminish its appearance.
Understanding cellulite
There are several causes of the appearance of cellulite on the skin as follows:
- Presence of certain hormones
Estrogen can encourage and aggravate the presence of cellulite on the skin although there is no dependable evidence to support this. There are also hormones that can contribute to cellulite development such as insulin, prolactin and thyroid hormones to name a few.
- Genetic makeup
Certain individuals are susceptible to getting cellulite more than others and researchers tie the connection to genes that are responsible for it. In addition, sex and race are other contributing factors.
- Life style
Overall, people who are changing diets so often or have more body fat are prone to cellulite. In the same manner, a stressful life style can also exacerbate the appearance of cellulite on the body.
How to get rid of cellulite
- Eat a healthy diet
Although it is easier said than done, eating a healthy diet is key to getting rid of cellulite. Know that cellulite is fat and therefore a diet low in fat is very important in the fight against cellulite.
- Exercise
Keep your weight at ideal levels to help get rid of cellulite. Exercise regularly to burn excess fat and calories that your body will likely store.
- Massage and exfoliate skin
Massage affected areas with your hands or using a massager to stimulate circulation. Use a serum and exfoliate skin.
- Camouflage affected areas
Minimise the appearance of lumpy skin using self tanners. Wear slimming gear to minimise the dimpling look.
Is there a cure for cellulite?
There is little scientific evidence to show that you can actually get rid of cellulite effectively. Liposuction and mesotherapy (breaking down of fat through injections of vitamins and minerals) are other known remedies for cellulite. The US FDA has also approved laser treatment in removing cellulite. The results of these treatments are mixed, but the search is on to cure it. At the moment, your best and safest bet is to eat sensibly, lose weight and exercise if you want to keep cellulite at bay.
