Actor Vinnie Jones and wife are battling skin cancer
After Hugh Jackman revealed that he had undergone surgery to remove a basal skin cell carcinoma (BCC) from his nose, Welsh actor and former football star Vinnie Jones has also revealed that he and his wife are also battling skin cancer .
The 48-year-old former footballer, who played for Wimbledon, Chelsea and Leeds United and has starred in movies like Snatch, Gone in 60 Seconds, and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and in X-Men, The Last Stand, first noticed a lump beneath his right eye last February believing it was a wart or a blackhead.
Having it checked out, the lump was diagnosed as a melanoma.
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world and melanoma’s are the most dangerous form of skin cancer and it kills over 2000 people each year in the UK and is caused mainly by intense UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn).
In an interview with the Sun Jones said that his skin cancer is "my toughest and scariest opponent yet” and that has already undergone three surgeries to remove the lesions, not only from under his eye but also from the back of his head.
He also added that : "When the doctor said I had skin cancer, the first thing I thought was, 'How long have I got?' A million and one things go through your head."
And he's worried he might find another lump at any time, even if he is fighting it with "everything I've got".
"It's weighing very heavily on me all the time," he continued. "It has really knocked me for six knocked me for six. One minute you're up but then you come crashing down. You're paranoid about it the whole time," he said and the news has made him “reassess his life and goals."
Jones is now spearheading an awareness campaign for the Melanoma Research Foundation, adding, "Footballers never put on sunblock and they should all be wearing it. Kids should all be wearing it every time they play sport.
"If you spot something on your skin that doesn't feel right... get it checked out immediately," he warned.
Jones also revealed his 47-year-old wife Tanya has battled the disease too and has had a number of tumors removed from her skin.
